...the eternal whisper of the Scotch firs just above us, and of the
sea in front. Yet, in all this quiet, an acute, an acrid consciousness
of a restrained hostility very near us, like a dog on a leash that
might be let go at any moment.
A Warning to the
Curious ~ M R James
Over three consecutive nights this December Robert Lloyd Parry of
Nunkie Theatre will be
performing his widely-praised trilogy of M R James ghost story
evenings at the twelfth century Leper Chapel on Newmarket Road.
The series starts on Thursday 8th December with A Pleasing Terror.
In Canon Alberic's Scrap-book, a young Cambridge antiquary
discovers the devil in the details of an old book in a medieval town
in the French Pyrenees... In The Mezzotint a ghoulish revenge
is enacted within a work of art, before the helpless eyes of a museum
curator in Oxford...
Oh, Whistle follows on Friday 9th December. Oh, Whistle,
and I'll Come to You, My Lad - a tale of nocturnal horror on the
Suffolk coast - is considered by many to be the author's masterpiece.
It is beautifully complemented here by The Ash Tree, a story of
witchcraft and vengeance down the generations.
A Warning to the Curious concludes the run on Saturday 10th
December. Lost Hearts features one of James's most memorable
black magicians, the predatory scholar Mr. Abney. It is paired here
with one of James' most poignant and personal works: in A Warning
to the Curious, inspired by the author's holidays in Aldeburgh, a
young archaeologist is haunted and hunted by the guardian of an
ancient treasure. The English seaside has never looked so menacing.
Performances start at 19:30 prompt and are scheduled to last
approximately 100 minutes, including an interval. Tickets are
available online or by telephone on 01223 359750. Pre-booking is
strongly recommended as these shows usually sell out.
